Media & Community with Photographer Evie Lovett

Evie Lovett is a photographer, artist and educator from Westminster West who describes her work as documentary portraiture.  She has photographed drag queens in Vermont; her own children; North American Indian Days on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana; the hospital in Rwinkwavu, Rwanda; Muslim Women in Paris, and more.  Her latest work uses digital media and encaustic to explore self, family, memory and history.  Her work can be seen at www.evielovett.com and http://www.vermontfolklifecenter.org/vision-voice/rainbow/.

Her exhibition Backstage at the Rainbow Cattle Co.: The Drag Queens of Dummerston, Vermont will complete a tour of the fourteen counties of Vermont when it opens at the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center in May 2015.  This exhibition was curated by the Vermont Folklife Center, who collaborated with Evie to create a multimedia exhibition of images and audio from interviews with the performers.  The tour was supported by the Vermont Community Foundation.

While working with the Vermont Folklife Center on her own project, Evie learned of the education programs run by the Folklife Center and trained to become a volunteer digital media instructor. In Fall 2014, she worked with 8th graders at the Putney Central School on two media projects which explored the subject of sustainability, using their community as classroom. Students learned the fundamentals of ethnographic research, interviewing techniques and media production.  Each student selected a member of the community to interview and photograph and produced a short film, a portrait of this individual and the work they do.  The films—Portraits of Sustainability in Putney--were screened at Next Stage Arts Project in Putney to a full house in late December.

Evie will speak about her own work, and the work she does with local students, using media as a tool for exploration of self and community.

This event will be held at 1pm, Tuesday March 3rd, 2015 at Marlboro College Graduate Center, 2nd Floor, 28 Vernon Street, Brattleboro, VT. There is no fee for attendance.  All are welcome to attend.
